Is the jacket waterproof?

Yes, our waterproof/breathable 2-layer shell uses a polyester / PU face fabric laminated to a polyurethane membrane. This means that the jacket can stretch without any degradation to the waterproof capabilities, but still breathes quite well (unlike most waterproof jackets).

How long will the battery last?

The Mercury heating system runs on a standard USB, 2-amp output battery. With a 10,000mAh battery you can get up to 4.5 hours of continuous heat at max power. Using our machine learning to control power output, we are able to power approximately 1 week of commuting use on a single charge (based on an average 20-30-minute commute).

Last updated: March 21, 2018 09:59

What are the care instructions?

The Mercury Jacket/Vest should be machine washed and tumble dried for up to 15 minutes, then hang dried.

How does the coffee-infused fabric work to eliminate odor?

S. Cafe is a recycled polyester that has been blended with coffee grounds that have been washed of their oils (used to make our PU membrane), giving it an odor absorptive effect. The high carbon and surface area of the coffee grounds attracts odor molecules and traps them preventing us from being able to smell them. Regular detergent recharges the fabric by washing it off. This insulation prevents conductive and convective heat transfer by trapping air, and preventing the circulation of air.

What’s the coldest temperature I can wear this?

The garment prevents convective and conductive heat transfer - through its windproof shell and insulation. The jacket alone is rated from 60-20 F, and down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit with the heaters on, but combined with a sweater and the heating elements, can be worn comfortably in much colder temperatures.

How do the heating pads work?

Three carbon-fiber heating pads (2 x 2.5-watt panels at the hand-warmer pockets and a 5-watt panel in the back) heat the garment through a process called resistive heating. Much like an incandescent light bulb, current flowing through an electrically resistive material like carbon fiber gives off heat. These pads have been rigorously washed and dried for over 75 cycles (surpassing most garment lifespans), and special manufacturing techniques such as heat encapsulation, silicone dipping, and off-set splicing ensure waterproofness and minimize short-circuiting.

How does the jacket know when to heat and how warm to get?

The garment is able to be controlled through multiple sources, and measures the output/heat needs through multiple sources. Two thermal sensors (one in the neck and chest to measure internal and external temperatures), a gyroscope, and Bluetooth connectivity are placed within the garment. A microcontroller processes the temperature/motion signals, and executes the logic to regulate how much power to send to the heating pads. It also communicates the current status of these streams to our application. You always have control of the heat through the jacket itself via a built-in control button, as well.

Last updated: March 21, 2018 09:59

What are the different heating modes?

Our garment has three modes: automatic, pre-heating, and app-control. Automatic mode uses a combination of external temperature, internal temperature and motion to determine the ideal power output. An initial trained function based on user testing gives a thermal response profile based primarily on external temperature, and piece-wise linear optimization model controls how high and how low of a temperature maximum and zero power should be applied which based on user feedback can be modulated. A special function analyzes acceleration to detect if the garment is being picked up and worn to initiate pre-heating.

What is your exchange/return policy?

If you follow the sizing chart carefully, we expect your new gear to fit as expected. If you wish to exchange your gear due to a sizing issue, we allow exchanges on unused gear for our backers 30-days after delivery. In the unlikely event that there is a manufacturing issue, we will repair/exchange wherever necessary. No returns are accepted.

Can this jacket be washed/dried?

Yes! The Mercury Jacket/Vest should be machine washed and tumble dried for up to 15 minutes, then hang dried.

Last updated: March 21, 2018 10:01

Is the battery included?

For domestic (US) backers, yes - we’ll be including a 10,000-mAh battery with wireless charging capabilities for compatible devices. Due to shipping constraints, a battery will not be shipped with international orders - though to make sure our international backers don’t get the short end of the stick, we’re picking up the tab on the outbound shipping for international orders. Note, duties and fees still apply.

I bought the team logo pack, what now?

We are really excited to offer personalized options for backers of the team logo pack. We will reach out after you complete the color / size selections to finalize your artwork. Please allow an additional 1-2 weeks for the delivery of these personalized pieces.

Last updated: March 21, 2018 10:05

Where can I get a battery?

The jacket is designed to be powered by any 5V, 2-amp output USB-A power bank. Our standard battery capacity is 10,000 mAH and battery life calculations have been built off of these specifications but any 5V, 2-amp output USB-A power bank will power the jacket. These power banks are widely available on Amazon, Jet, Overstock, etc. and are increasingly common at convenience stores, CVS, Duane Reade, etc.

What shipping carrier will you use?

Domestic Shipping: If you’re in the US, we’ll be shipping your package out of our Devens, MA fulfillment center using a ground service (USPS, UPS, DHL, etc, depending on destination and shipment size). These packages will have tracking information that will work within the US.

International Shipping: Non-US orders will ship from our Devens, MA, US fulfillment center via DHL or USPS depending on location and shipment size. We are waiving all shipping costs for international customers instead of providing a battery due to shipping constraints. In the event that we can fulfill directly from our manufacturing center, it may help alleviate some duties/fees.

Note that we cannot alter the value of your products on customs declarations - the value will be declared as the total value of the items contained in the shipment. Additionally, no orders will be marked as a “gift”. Duties and fees may still apply based on your delivery location.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
